Disease Mechanisms

Research over the past two decades has provided significant advances in the understanding of the pathophysiology of IBS. Currently, IBS is viewed as a dysregulation in the complex interplay between events ocurring in the gut lumen (including microbiota), the mucosa, the enteric nervous system (ENS), and the central nervous system.10 This dysregulation can alter sensation, motility, brain-gut interactions, and neuroimmune interactions.10
