Irritable bowel syndrome medications

Although the condition cannot be cured, treatments are available to alleviate symptoms.

The medicines that can help with IBS symptoms include:

  • Medicines to ease diarrhea
  • Medicines to ease constipation
  • Medicines to ease abdominal pain and bloating
  • Antidepressants: they mainly work by blocking pain. When used to treat IBS, they are given at a much lower dose than would normally be given to treat depression.
  • Medicines that block nerve signals going to the intestines
  • Antibiotics
  • Probiotics

As stated these measures help alleviate symptoms, but do not cure the condition. The chronic nature of irritable bowel syndrome and the challenge of controlling its symptoms can be frustrating for both patients and healthcare providers.
